1490 - Tenochtitlan

The beautiful city of Tenochtitlan is located where Mexico City stands in the year 2000. It is probably the largest city in the world in 1490. With 250 000 people, it is bigger than the combined populations of London and Paris, considered swarming metropoli in Europe at this time.

This town has got it all: temples galore, a university (complete with books), hanging gardens, a system of canals... They even have suburbs!

The people of this city are the Mexicas, although they prefer to be called Aztecs. Their society is very structured and hierarchical, complete with nobility, guilds and regular folk. Nobody gets drunk on the week-ends around here. Alcohol is prohibited to anyone under the age of seventy! I guess once you get to be that old, nobody can tell you what to do.

This city is full of babes. The stupid war economy that keeps Tenochtitlan so well-heeled needs a serious army. So, most of the eligible bachelors are all warriors, and are they BUFF!

Feathers are a big deal here. So big that they have to practice conservational feather-farming. This is not surprising when you see the incredible colours they come in: brilliant reds, blues, and my fave, green. The feather-workers' guild creates headdresses, clothing and these awesome, very graphic designs on shields and flags. Who needs paint?!!

Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325. It is said that the god, Huitzilopochtli (and you thought my name was hard to pronounce!), told his people to settle at the spot where they found an eagle holding a serpent in its beak and perched on a cactus growing out of a stone. Does this sound familiar? It's the image on the Mexican flag!
